DR. HELEN FARR

Lecturer in Archaeology

Dr. Helen Farr is a Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Southampton.

Her interest in Italian archaeology commenced with work in southern Italy for her doctorate at the University of Cambridge, since then she has spent the last decade working on projects around the globe. Helen currently holds a prestigious EU Horizon 2020 funded award and is a prehistoric specialist. Her interests and expertise span from the emergence of agriculture and spread of the Neolithic through the Mediterranean, to submerged landscapes, the origins of seafaring and maritime trade. Whilst usually found working on the coast as a maritime archaeological expert and commercial diver, her work on ancient landscapes and the past environment has led her to a particular interest in the creation of human worlds and identity.

In addition to teaching at all levels of higher education, Helen co-created a Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) that has taught more than 20,000 students around the world and is involved in a series of STEM education projects encouraging young people into higher education. Helen is passionate about protecting cultural heritage and public engagement, has been an Associate Editor for the Journal of Maritime Archaeology, selected as one of the BBC's 'Expert Women', and invited to brief MEPs in Brussels. She has published widely and is currently writing a book.
